superpower: eastern european vocal styling

music and sound healing
at the junction of ancestry & play

Natalie Nowytski changes the molecules in the room.

She works at the intersection of music, ancestry, and sound healing as an award-winning composer, vocal alchemist, multi-instrumentalist, and educator. Natalie weaves ancestry and language through compositions, workshops, and performances for theater, dance, choirs, chamber ensembles, and just about anything that brings together disparate ideas and people.

With more than 50 languages in her musical repertoire and a composer’s sonic palette deeply rooted in her Ukrainian heritage, Natalie creates genre-blending music that defies easy categorization. What she calls her superpower—Eastern European vocal techniques—is a skill honed through a lifetime of global music study and performances with everything from folk ensembles to orchestras to indie bands. Switching comfortably between Balkanesque folk, operatic sweetness, and otherworldly mouth sounds, she’s often sought out as an “exotic” voice, lending her skills for Balkan party music with Orkestar Bez Ime, ambient post-modern improvisations with Paris1919, chamber pop with Follow the Firefly, American folk with Country Roads, and a range of other appearances including sound baths with Marc Anderson, as a special guest soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra, occasional looper-driven solo performances, and even voiceovers. She has received composition and performance awards from the McKnight Foundation, Jerome Foundation, American Composers Forum, SAGE Awards, and Minnesota State Arts Board. Find her music on Bandcamp for a taste.

As a classically trained somatic voice coach and sound energy worker, she helps people reclaim confidence and discover what “home” sounds like in their body through consulting, grief/primal singing workshops, and sound baths steeped in the wisdom of sonic anatomy.

As an educator, Natalie’s vast skills combined with her disarming nature make her an in-demand teacher, coach, and mentor whose unique pedagogy cuts through clients’ deep-seated barriers. She teaches both in academia and business settings and has mentored a number of music professionals. She has served as university guest faculty across the U.S. and has helped develop new degree programs.

Natalie weaves together tradition and innovation in ways that move people across every boundary…. Her music allows room for grief and pain, and yet embedded in it is a deep and powerful hope.

Presenter

[Natalie] was beyond what I could have imagined….she sounded like the music somehow rose up from the earth and she channeled it.

Audience member

Extraordinary

Minneapolis Star Tribune

Breathtakingly talented singer…consistently top notch.

Aisle Say

I was impressed at Natalie’s ability to work with a wide range of egos, consistently striving to be positive, and hence, elliciting the best performance possible from each as individual, and from the group as a whole (even when egos clashed!).
